11 March 2020, last day I visited my college library. After that we all meet an unprecedented pandemic. Schools were shut, livelihood lost, people were on streets, everything just changed. There was major change that occur in terms of studies is the online studies. With less accessibility of the smartphones and network, students suffered a lot. The change that we were thinking in the education sector comes so early. Because we were not prepared for that, still we are not equipped with the best ideas.
Switching to the online study was the wrong decision?
India is a diverse country. We have people from all race and religion and also from the different economic backgrounds. For those who have access to the internet and have digital medium, it is a good decision to keep going with the educational flow. But, for those who lack technology, gadgets, it is certainly not a good decision. We always go with the common opinion and then forget that we are diverse. The students are different. Their capacity to gain the knowledge is different. Even for those who have access to the internet, online classes are not easy cup of cake. Online medium came with the smartphones, which students barely use for the studies. Starting with the online class on the mobile is just like watching a video. You need to attend that because you do not want to miss the attendance, because contents are already missing. Opening the slides and reading it aloud in the 40 minutes of class is not teaching. At least I do not consider it. Joining the online class and coming to the offline exams whenever the corona take rest is not a nightmare now. The content that we get in the online class is just ppt and little bit of discussion in very few classes. The one thing that we have forget that we are studying and are around the family at the same time. So camouflaging is the tough task here. I do not know whether it is a good thing or bad but the speed in the online class is faster as compare to the offline class.
Are students getting the speed of the online class?
There are certain capacities for the brain to work in a day. Our brain can not function thoroughly, doing the same thing. The same applies to the studies also. Digesting the whole content of the online class regularly is a tough task.
One day I was having a discussion with my friends on the same topic and I said, "If students are not getting anything taught in the online class then why they don't unmute their selves and ask questions"?
Anusha replied, Suruchi not everyone in the class is for study purpose. Not everyone is interested in the studies, so what's the purpose?
To be very honest I had never thought about these scenario. I thought when anyone is doing graduation, they are doing with their heart and mind. But that's not the truth.
Students study only for the exams
There are 821 universities in India (2017 data), and excelling in the universities and the colleges is based on the examinations, so why students shouldn't study for exams?
Right now I am student of semester system and I get exam every 2nd month, and, not to forget the unending list of assignments and projects.
If I am not going to pass in the semester exam, I have to sit with the juniors for the exam next year, so why to take the risk? One more thing, even if a student clears her mid term and theory paper and skip the practical, she has to sit for the exam next year with all loads of assignments from mid term. Are students really guilty?
Role of teachers
We all are struggling to get things back on the track, so do the teachers. It is not easy for teachers also. They are also finding it difficult to get their hands on the new technologies. But, the question is, Are teachers made only to complete the syllabus and prepare the students for the exams?
As a student I believe that it is the duty of a teacher to make the class interesting. To study and not to study will be on students. But, first make the class a suitable environment so that students can express themselves.
I have gone through many articles about the changing way of education and when the school will open how teachers should handle the students. And I must say it is just possible in the article not in present, at least for today.
In this educational gap period students have lost the way of expression. They don't show interest in most of the things. And it does not mean that they have no capability to learn the things and to understand. Expressing and understanding are two different things.
What is the solution?
Judging someone on the basis of an exam is not a good idea. It is possible that those who secure more marks have no real knowledge and those getting average marks have abundance of knowledge, because fetching marks is an art. We need a field for the holistic approach of students. An environment where, every child express themselves. A discussion class where we express ideas, a debate on any topic. In science we lack debate but, it is possible to have a debate in science also. Showing our arts with creativity like, model making, presentation, silent drama and even theater. It is just a matter of creativity. Students should be evaluated on these basis also. This will certainly reduce the exam baggage.
